SDRC Director Shares Expertise in Proposal Development

Conceptualization: The first of the four basic steps in the research process, it comprises 50% of the work required. It is a “soft skill” that can only be learned through practice.

This was one among a number of ideas shared by SDRC Director Dr. Maria Caridad H. Tarroja with an audience made up largely of graduate students majoring in Psychology and from the College of Education, as well as members of the Liberal Arts faculty, during her presentation on “Writing Proposals for Social Science Research” on January 18, 2017. Held at the European Documentation Center of the Henry Sy, Sr. Hall and sponsored by the University Research Coordination Office (URCO), the three-hour forum focused on processes, issues, challenges and practical guidelines in the development of research proposals.   Read more >>>

DepEd and Asia Foundation Partner with SDRC to Address Out-of-School Youth Issues

Twice as many boys as girls have been found to drop out of high school in the Philippines in recent years. Family problems, the need to work, illness, financial difficulties, and loss of interest are what feed this condition, diminishing the promise of today’s youth.

The situationer was shared by Mr. Henry Grageda, Senior Program Officer of the Asia Foundation, during a presentation of results of the study “Understanding the Context of Lack of Interest among Out-of-School Youth” held on December 9, 2016 at the Orchid Garden Suites in Manila. Led by SDRC Director Dr. Maria Caridad H. Tarroja with team members Dr. Abdul Jhariel Osman and Ms. Klarizze Valdoria, the presentation was delivered before a gathering of stakeholders from the Department of Education, the Basic Education Sector Transformation (BEST) program of the Australian Embassy, Barangay Leveriza in Malate, Cayetano Arellano High School in Tondo, and the Calamba Bayside National High School. Among the participants in the stakeholders’ discussion was special guest Br. Armin Luistro, former Department of Education Secretary and current head of the DepEd Superintendent Leadership Training Program. Read more >>>

SDRC Participates in SERP-P Network Biennial Meeting

Welcoming member-institution representatives to the 4th SERP-P Network Biennial Meeting, Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS) on December 6, 2016, President Dr. Gilberto Llanto pointed out that the group’s efforts would be exerted in “the era of post-truth,” at once posing a challenge to all present. According to him, “In an era where changes are coming (in) many different ways, the value of organizations like SERP-P becomes more pronounced. SERP-P is about the truth; it is about empirical evidence and producing policies that are evidence-based.” Read more >>>

37th Anniversary Presentations Span the Stages of Life

SDRC doctoral apprentice Crisanto Regadio noted that research at the Center truly moves from birth to old age, in the range of studies it covered in 2016.

Serving as host during the 37th Anniversary program, held on December 14, 2016 at the Hotel Benilde Maison De La Salle, Regadio pointed out that the Center pursued projects involving the exclusive use of breast milk for infants, as well as the various dimensions of the need for social pension among the elderly. The significance of these studies validated the observations Vice Chancellor for Research Innovation Dr. Raymond Tan relayed in his end of the year message—that SDRC keeps academic activities grounded through real work in the field. He acknowledged the Center’s contribution to the University’s current research standing, being in the lead among Philippine educational institutions, and having increased its output threefold since 2010.
