Research Fellow Included in Bogota Colloquium Proceedings

The paper entitled “When People are Forced to Flee by Nature: Lessons Learnedfrom the Experiences of the Displaced in a Philippine Municipality,” presented by SDRC Research Fellow Alicia Manlagnit and research assistant Kay Katherine Zabala in Bogota in June 2010, has been included in the proceedings of theColoquio Internacional Asia-America Latina (Colloquium for Latin America and Asia) on Comprender los desplazamientos de poblacion: Miradas plurales desde la Universidad (Understanding Population Displacements: A plurality of Views from the University) published by the University of Santo Tomas in Colombia. The paper is one of the papers from the Near East and Asia delivered during the colloquium and included in the published proceedings.

Based on a study conducted at the Center through funding from the InternationalFederation of Catholic Universities (IFCU), the paper describes the experiences of displaced people in the municipality of St. Bernard in Southern Leyte province. The study was part of a three-year project involving five Asian institutions—namely Stella Maris College-India, Don Bosco-India, Universite Saint Joseph de Beyrouth, Assumption University-Thailand and SDRC in De La Salle University-Manila—in exploring the concept of “displaced population” in the context of each country’s respective cultures.
